Why Asaram was caught from Indore?
In 1972, Asaram made his first cottage on the banks of river Sabarmati in Mittera town, about 10 km from Ahmedabad.
Asaram’s spiritual project started from here, gradually spread from different cities of Gujarat to different states of the country.
At the beginning, the effect of Asaram, who was tempted to serve the trio of his ‘discourses, country medicines and bhajan kirtan’ to poor, backward and tribal groups coming from Gujarat’s rural areas, gradually started growing in the urban middle-class areas of the state.
In the early years, after the discourse, free meals distributed in the name of Prasad also played an important role in accelerating the number of Asaram’s ‘devotees’.
According to Asaram’s official website, he has four crore followers all over the world today.
In the coming decades, Asaram, together with his son Narayan Sai, built the empire of 400 Ashrams spread across the country and abroad.

Asaram has assets worth Rs 10 thousand crores as well as many ashrams, which are currently being investigated by the tax department and the Enforcement Directorate of Central and Gujarat States.
This investigation also includes cases of land grabbing for illegal construction of ashram.
Asaram’s political influence
As the number of devotees increased, politicians also tried to make penetration through a big voter group through Asaram.
In the list of his devotees from 1990 to 2000, veteran leaders like Bharatiya Janata Party’s LK Advani and Nitin Gadkari had joined former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as well.
Senior Congress leaders like Digvijay Singh, Kamal Nath and Motilal Vora are also included in this list.

In the early 2000s, the biggest name for Asaram’s ‘philosophy’ is the name of India’s current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
But in 2008, after the murder of 2 children in Asaram’s Mutarera Ashram, leaders of almost every political party made the distance from them.
What happened in Mutera Ashram?
On July 5, 2008, the bodies of 10 year old Abhishek Vaghela and 11-year-old Deepesh Vaghela of the Sabarmati river, located outside the Mutera ashram of Asaram, were found recovered in deformed condition.
The admirers of these cousins living in Ahmedabad had their admission in the school of Asaram’s Gurukul just a few days before the death.
The state government had formed the DK Trivedi Commission to investigate the matter, but the results of the investigation of this commission have not been made public till date.
Meanwhile, in 2012, the state police fixed charges of non-murderous murder of seven employees of Mutera ashram. The case is currently being heard in the sessions court of Ahmedabad.
